About Me
Let me start by introducing myself. I'm Becca, a full-time mum to an energetic toddler who can give the Energiser Bunny a run for its money. On February 22nd, 2024, my husband and I were blessed with the arrival of our precious baby girl. So, double the chaos and double the love.
For the past 15 years, I've worked in childcare as both lead and assistant educator in childcare centres and as a live-in nanny on cattle stations around Central Queensland. What a wild ride this has been! From translating toddler gibberish to wrangling teens, it's been a journey filled with laughter, sweat, and tears. However, while pregnant with my first child, I decided to be a stay-at-home mum. Best decision ever! Being the first person your little one sees in the morning and the last to tuck them in at night is the best feeling ever. There's nothing else quite like it. Every milestone and every stumble are the moments every mum dreams of witnessing. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.
As a single-income family, I've been seeking ways to express myself while bringing in a little extra cash. I've explored various hobbies and interests over the years. From making beaded jewellery to photography, however, nothing has come close to crochet. It's not just something I do for fun anymore; it's become a true passion of mine. Whenever I get the chance, I grab my crochet hook and dive into a new project. It's become such a big part of me that people always ask if something's wrong when they see me without my crochet hooks and yarn. It's been such a rewarding experience, and I can't wait to share my crochet journey with all of you!
The Birth of A Hobby
I have always loved creating things with my own hands. I have so many fond memories of learning to sew and cross-stitch with my mum to look back on. By taking a blank canvas, yarn, or thread and turning it into something beautiful and meaningful, you're bringing yourself to every stitch and line. I can lose myself for hours in this creative process, completely focused on the details and letting my imagination run wild. It's my little escape from the chaos of everyday life. The cherry on top; nothing compares to the feeling of someone else appreciating your hard work.
Participating in these activities taught me the importance of being patient and persistent. It's not always easy, but it pays off in the end. Making things with my hands is something I hope to encourage in my children now that I am a mum. Instilling these important life skills will serve them well in the years to come as they develop their imaginations.
Cross-stitching has been a fulfilling hobby for me for a long time, but I felt I needed a new challenge. Crochet was not something I discovered until my teenage years. My curiosity was piqued after seeing some of the beautiful designs, and I was eager to give it a try. Despite my best attempts, I was unable to grasp the concept. The crochet hooks felt strange in my hands, and the stitches seemed elusive. Frustrated, I gave up on crochet hooks and returned to cross-stitching instead.
After being laid up for several weeks after a major surgery, I found myself stuck at home and bored out of my mind. One day I was poking around in an old craft box, looking for something to do, and I came across my old crochet hooks; probably collected dust for years! Despite my lack of experience, I decided to give Crochet another try with a strong sense of determination.
I used online tutorials as a guide and thoroughly immersed myself in this fascinating craft. In practice, I became completely enamored with the beat of the hook and the magical way yarn transforms into beautiful stitches. The more I practiced, the more my imagination allowed me to explore different designs and techniques. One of the things I love most about crochet is its unlimited versatility. It goes beyond functionality, allowing me to create enchanting designs that bring joy to my loved ones. From quirky beanies to adorable amigurumi, the infinite possibilities of crochet never cease to amaze me.
When my confidence grew, I began to share my creations with loved ones, even getting requests for special orders. Handmade gifts became my medium to express love and gratitude towards the special people in my life. Every stitch of these personalized items was infused with hours of dedication and affection, making them truly meaningful. In addition to crafting gifts, crocheting has allowed me to connect with people and spark interesting conversations. With my love and effort poured into every piece, people couldn't help but express curiosity and eagerness to learn more about the craft and other creations I made.
Today, crochet has become a constant companion in both happy and challenging times. It has taught me valuable lessons in the beauty of accepting imperfections. The possibilities of what I can create with just yarn and a hook keep expanding as I explore new techniques. Every project I undertake presents an opportunity for personal growth and self-expression. The medium of crochet has allowed me to express love and creativity through each stitch.
